Lizzo is in some hot water after making comments about Britney. The internet is currently debating as a clip from the singer’s latest appearance on a podcast goes viral online.
On an episode of the Sibling Rivalry Podcast with former “RuPaul’s Drag Race” stars Bob the Drag Queen and Monét X Change, the singer, who is set to appear as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in an upcoming biopic, had some thoughts about Janet Jackson and her enduring legacy.
“I have to really clear up some sh*t up,” Lizzo explained on the podcast, clarifying her previous comments referring to Janet Jackson as the Queen of Pop. “People came for me on the Internet because I said Janet Jackson is the Queen of Pop.”
She went on to explain why she gives the “Miss You Much” singer that coveted title. “Here is why I said Janet is the Queen of Pop...Britney Spears is doing a Janet impression.” She then adds that Spears “said it” herself.
“Janet is her diva,” she explained. “There were no such things as Pop divas before Janet. Janet was first. She was famous when Madonna was a kid watching her on television.”
If Britney’s love of the “Rhythm Nation” singer is so well documented, why are many Britney fans still so pressed about Lizzo’s comments?
It seems it’s less Lizzo’s sentiment and more her wording, specifically calling Britney an “impersonator” rather than a “fan.” Another user, while acknowledging that Britney has cited Janet as an inspiration to her in the past, took more issue with Lizzo referring to the pop star as an “impersonator.”
“Britney always loved and spoke about how she’s inspired by Janet,” the post on X reads. “Janet herself loves Britney. Idk what Lizzo is trying to do here.”
The year was 2006, Timbaland said that Britney would have to "humble herself" and contact him and Justin Timberlake if she wanted a hit.
In 2007, she released Blackout, now included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an honor only awarded to groundbreaking albums.
As the 21-year-old Canadian pop star releases her third album ‘So Close To What’, she speaks to Ellie Muir about fame, toxic relationships and making music with her rapper boyfriend Kid Laroi
In the week that I speak with Canadian pop star Tate McRae, she’s inescapable. Posters for her world tour are plastered across social media. Her songs are blasting from the speakers in Tesco. When I arrive at my Wednesday night dance class, the teacher is busy choreographing a routine to McRae’s turbo-charged, innuendo-filled latest release “Sports Car”.
It makes sense that McRae is everywhere right now, having just released her third, much-anticipated album. So Close To What is a punchier, more decisive offering compared to the vaguely radio-ready songs about teenage angst and lust that defined her early releases. Simply put, it’s more grown up – partly because, well, McRae has grown up.
“I feel so much more confident in my taste and the way I am as a person,” she tells me, speaking from her pristine showroom-looking apartment in Los Angeles. “I started writing music when I was 16, I really knew nothing. I didn’t really know what the f*** releasing a debut album meant. I was so young.” Granted, she’s only 21 now, but 17 already feels like a lifetime ago.
It comes as little surprise, then, that McRae is frequently compared to her forebears like Christina Aguilera and The Pussycat Dolls. The one she gets the most, though, is a young Britney Spears. “I find that flattering and scary. It’s such a crazy statement because no one can compare to Britney Spears. It’s like comparing someone to Michael Jackson!” she says almost shrieking, manically waving her French-manicured hands in the air. “That’s the blueprint!”
